The CRA will review your application and will send you a letter to notify you of your approval for the Disability Tax Credit and the time frame you were found eligible for.
For example, if you were found eligible from 2015 to 2023, the letter will state the following: “2015 – 2023 – You are eligible to claim the disability tax credit for yourself.”
In our experience, the CRA will often approve a person’s DTC for up to 3-5 years into the future, based on the severity and the status of the disability. Once your Disability Tax Credit eligibility expires, you must re-apply and prove your disability to the CRA again, just like you did the first time around.
NOTE: For a small percentage of applications, the CRA may find the applicant’s impairments irreversible and therefore grant them indefinite eligibility, their Disability Tax Credit eligibility will never expire.
