We at Disability Credit Canada always look for opportunities to help and advocate for Disabled Canadians. We are pleased to announce that the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre (MNjcc) is organizing the third annual ReelAbilities Film Festival: Toronto (RAFFTO), Canada’s largest film festival dedicated to showcasing Deaf and Disabled societies. This Festival will showcase 25 films in various venues across the city from May 29 – June 4, 2018.

ReelAbilities Film Festival was first set up in New York in 2007 and in 2016 it came across the border to Canada when it launched in Toronto as ReelAbilities Film Festival: Toronto, making its mark as the first international chapter of the Festival. Since its inauguration, RAFFTO has grown rapidly after including new programming, and more movies each year and has greeted thousands of filmgoers. A jury of artists, movie producers, and curators of all capacities from Canada has selected the best and most impactful movies in the current year’s lineup which will be showcased in the Film Festival.

The Toronto's ReelAbilities Film Festival“Film is a powerful medium of representation often reflecting our stories and experiences back to us,” said Liviya Mendelsohn, Artistic Director of ReelAbilities Film Festival: Toronto. “We’re excited to announce a diverse slate of accessible films made by ground-breaking Canadian and international filmmakers that tell the stories of Deaf people and those with disabilities who are often underrepresented in media and film. This year, we are presenting our first-ever comedy night and will be exploring the topics of sexuality and disability, disability rights, the Deaf film scene, and inclusive design through our panels and workshops. We are also pleased that through the ReelEducation school and field trip program, we are helping to educate youth about life with disabilities.”

“RAFFTO programming expands beyond the six-day lineup, with free screenings taking place pre-Festival at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and Doors Open Toronto. In addition to screenings, the Festival will include Q&As with film talent; industry workshops; and panel discussions surrounding sexuality and assent, disability rights and advocacy, accessible media creation, and universal design. For more information, please visit reelabilities.org/toronto.”
